This week we went to see Bohemian Rhapsody (2018 movie about Queen music band. )

We saw it at our lovely old theatre which was restored in the 1980s. I took some photos during and after the performance, also Acerules took some of the building after she finished work. (She missed most of the movie, but that’s the price of growing up!) I enjoyed it and sang along to the songs, which resonate with my generation, however I’m sick of movies changing history to suit their formulas, fact is more interesting than fiction. Several films that were up for Oscars this year played fast and loose with history, including a made up scene between Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth 1st, who never actually met in real life.

I did like the sharp cutting of this movie, that contributed to the comedic timing and dramatic moments, such as when an object throwing fight started in the band, someone called out “no, not the coffee maker!” and then the camera panned away. Throughout, gratuitous sex and violence was avoided in this movie, that I found refreshing. Issues of identity and reaching potential were addressed without lecturing too. But the glorious music was salted liberally throughout, and was the very best aspect, hey, you know I like music 😉

Well, hubby is not such a Queen fan, but is a bona fide movie buff with decades of movie knowledge, so here is his review.

“Bohemian Rhapsody.

I have to preface this, in that I am not usually a fan of music bio pics and was never really a fan of Queen either. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. The performances overall were really well done, in particular the lead role actor. The price of fame and the excesses it attracts and accumulates. I am not surprised to hear he has won an Oscar , richly deserved. It was a good insight into the band’s internal relationships also the machinations of the music industry and their joy of performing. You really got to see how Queen and Freddy in particular held and “owned’ the crowds that came to see them live. By the end of the film I realised how different Queen were and importantly how much of their music was really good.

Bohemian Rhapsody also won the Oscar for Best Film Editing, and when John Ottman accepted the award and gave his speech, he not only mentioned my hometown of San Jose, California, he also mentioned a street that it’s in a neighborhood next to the one where I grew up. He even went to the same high school as my older brother (but was two years ahead). Now I have to see Bohemian Rhapsody.

  3. What I can’t figure out is why Gen Z is so obsessed with this particular song, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It is a vocal tour de force, but it is so incredibly sad and without hope. One of our daughter’s choirs performed it and there was absolutely no pleasure in hearing one’s child sing those words. Fame often brings a terrible price. This song seems to sum it up.

    • Hi, Nora, there were many other of their songs in the movie 🙂 Music is certainly a personal taste thing. (Sorry, I’m having difficulty finding words after writing all day today).

  4. Cath I saw the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a showcase for the fantastic music and how it came to be. There were some major inconsistencies with the storyline such as the fact that there were 2 other members who released solo albums before Freddy and that they never broke up. But we will chalk that up to artistic license. Overall, a fantastic movie and the lead actor deserved his Oscar!
